Don't tread on me
I don’t know exactly what I want to talk about, but I want to. I’m currently cashed out on GI physiology.  In a few minutes, after I rationalize to myself that I’ve completed sufficient studying for the day, I’ll go home and make out what I can of this almost unsustainable lifestyle. I’ve lately suffered episodes of fatigue and exhaustion.  About every 3 weeks I...

Ham and Cheese
The Question: Can you classify people into sandwich types? The Answer: Yes. One of my professors at school is pure ham and cheese.  No mustard, no mayo, not even a few slices of onion or lettuce.  Just the straight h and c, and definitely on white bread.  He could probably be the type that you buy at the airport where the cheese gets a little smushed on the sides and melds together with the...

Back On The Train
I really meant to post this a while ago when my Phish resurgence was at its peak.  But nevertheless, I’m still ridin’ high. March 6,7, and 8th marked the return of Phish.  After 4 1/2 years in the wilderness, while the front man was arrested for drugs and put on house arrest, they’re back.  And it feels great. It has been a gift really.  I reminder that I’m not just...

Simplicity
I’m nostalgic for the past.  Even for times when I wasn’t alive.  When everything was more simple.  When people used pay phones…I remember going to the mall and having to call my mom to pick me up with either two quarters, a phone card, and using a landline cemented in the ground.  Now those phones are obsolete.  Convenience has been exploited by the free market, and we can each...

Jedi in disguise
Am I training to be a Jedi Knight?  I know it sounds a bit out of reach, but let’s think about it… I am required to sacrifice all self indulgence as I further my training into medicine.  Love? Forget about it.  No time, and if you even do, then you will compromise your academic integrity and clinical ability.  Didn’t you see what happened to Annikan?  Love led him to the dark...

Animals (not the Pink Floyd album)
I’m sorry, but animal rights activists are going to have to be put on the back burner for the moment.  With two wars, an economy teetering on depression, global financial crisis, a warming climate, overpopulation, and even part of our human population devoid of their natural civil rights (gays, lesbians), there is little room in the agenda for passing any meaningful legislation conserving,...

The Office
As my anatomical adventure came to an end last week, I plunged into a lethargic marathon of “The Office”, the dry humored Britishly revamped television show that has served as the foundation of my recent purpose.  I don’t think there are too many shows that I consider phenomenal, but along with The Sopranos, Seinfeld, The Simpsons (back in the 90s), and The West Wing, I would...

Routine Maintenance
My thoughts and writing have been drained into a dismal see of the “the same”.  Routine is the moderator, only allowing for small variations and degrees of latitude like the strict third grade teacher lecturing on geographical landmarks.  I wish I could entertain you with a thought concerning other than the branches of the trigeminal nerve, but my foundation of knowledge is steadily...

The Ping-Pong Clock
I was trying to snag a quick nap in our Student Activities Center (the SAC, if you will…how attractive of a napping location) when I listened to the brilliant clock that is the ping-pong rally.   My eyes were closed, but ears open, as I layed on the assuredly bacteria-laden sofa.  Now, for those of you who don’t know me, I have extreme difficulty zoning out external stimuli to fall...

Dichotomous Cognition
For the past how ever many weeks now, I’ve been thinking about only two things: The election and anatomy.  What an odd mix.  I’ll wake up in the middle of the night with my hands dead asleep and not know if it’s because of ligation of the median nerve or it’s due to the .6% drop in the North Carolina polls.  My meals are a mix of Keith Oblermann and Cornony sinuses.  Did...

Today, I Vote
Before I vote, I would like to post the link the New York Times endorsement of Barack Obama: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/24/opinion/24fri1.html?em Our American heritage has fought and died for us to exercise this right.  I feel as if my generation takes it for granted.  This practice of civic responsibility is not just a privilage, but it’s a way to secure the stabilization of our...

Remember Similes?
I must come to the defense of the human body.  Someone recently likened the human body to the engineering and wiring of a car (and he happens to be a med student).  Although I see where Steve was coming from, I’d have to liken that analogy to the comparison of a psychiatric patient with an obscure identity disorder plus OCD and tremors to Sarah Plain and Tall.  The human body is so complex,...

One Menstrual Cycle
It’s been a whole month since I’ve posted.  That’s med school for ya.  During that time I’ve bled, shot out an egg, and have recovered.  In other words, I finished my first course of med school, started anatomy, and dug out some longissimus muscle.  Dank nuggets. My friend Dani, before informing her correctly, thought being Kosher was not mixing meat and vegetables....

Chocolate Chip Cookies (and milk)
What a thing.  So simple, yet wholesome.  So many varieties, but all reaching the same target.  Soft, mushy, and gooey, or tender, crisp and to the point, the chocolate chip cookie never ceases to hit the 1/8 void still left in your tummy after an already ingested dinner.  Add a glass of milk, and you’re just swimmin’ in the fun.

Hey Blog, I got some News for you
I just told some more peeps about your stationary/digital/amorphous ass.  That’s right.  So, get ready to be read, or not be read, depending on your popularity.  Strap on those arrogant shoes and don a little cleave, cause it’s your day, your time, your moment.  Get ready to shine.  I don’t know if it’s the “fierce urgency of now” kind moment, but there’s...

Cram baby, you bastard
The amount of material that needs to be stuffed into a medical student’s head is ridiculous.  I would liken it to stuffing a sleeping bag into its case, and you think there’s no god damn way it will fit, but then somehow, just somehow, it does.  That’s all for now.

Republicanism
My apprehensiveness and fears about this election are mounting.  I had felt very comfortable about the prospects of an Obama victory before the shift in tactics by the republicans before their convention.  Their choice to nominate Sarah Palin, the Alaskan Governor to the VP spot says a lot about what is going on.  McCain is flocking to his base, using wedge issues (trivial social issues that have...

Units In A Factory
So I realized I haven’t blogged about the election or Obama yet, and that this task surely needs to be met.  However, I had a frustrating but humbling thought earlier today on my drive home in Chicago traffic. Reasons why we’re all units in a factory: On my drive home in Chicago traffic (just like previously mentioned a few lines o’er these digital notations), I became...

Brain Tumors
I’m starting to gain a decent fear of the long-term consequences of cell phone usage.  The current research out there is for the most part inconclusive.  However, you gotta think, even if the waves emitted by your phone, or received by your phone are low energy, chances are that usage over 40-60 years must do some damage.  This led me to purchasing a blue tooth not too long ago.  I know, I...

Terrible Post
I’m balls deep in med school now.  There’s a jumpy little riff being played by my friend ryan dancing in the background of my thoughts as I write this.  No certain chronology, sequence, or order is coming out of my frantic fingers.  Just strings.  Much like in the theoretical physics theory.  Energy passed from one thought to another while my dialogue with you is actually devoid of any...

Sleep
Sleep.  A phenomenon that has escaped me lately.  It has fled from John McCain’s gates of hell and eloped into the distance with my sanity. I’m trying to call a rapid cease-fire on my neurons in my brain, much like you’d think the current Georgian-Russian military/political situation would merit.  As it happens, the analogous circumstance in my life just momentarily became less...

My belated Hello
Hey “audience” (if you, single reader, merit that title),  I heard about this blog site from none other than my good friend Steve Wisel, whose blog you can find at soundingbored.tumblr.com.  By judging his blog, I’ve already committed a pre-ejac and dove into some mildly heady material before formally introducing myself.    Devil’s Advocate for Completely TrivialMatters: Is...
